SUMMARY:SEMINAR | Essential Structures: Building Successful Fiction and Memoir
DESCRIPTION:An intensive three-hour seminar exploring the hidden architectures that make stories compelling\, memorable\, and emotionally effective. \n\n\n\nFor Memoir and Fiction \n\n\n\nLive on Zoom | Saturday\, November 28 | 2-5 pm Eastern \n\n\n\nDiscover a range of narrative structures used in contemporary fiction and memoir\, including three-act design\, lyric and fragmented forms\, braided narratives\, epistolary structures\, frames\, and modular storytelling. Rather than treating structure as a formula\, we’ll examine how writers shape reader attention\, tension\, revelation\, and emotional momentum via crucial structural decisions. \n\n\n\nExamine key structural principles to determine whether a manuscript succeeds or stalls. We’ll discuss the difference between what writers want to communicate and what readers actually want to experience\, what “showing” truly means on the sentence and scene level\, and the most common pitfalls that weaken fiction and memoir projects.  \n\n\n\nIn this seminar\, you’ll gain a solid sense of the basic principles for constructing your own fiction or memoir narratives that are vivid\, dynamic\, engaging\, original\, and structurally sound. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this three-hour seminar\, you will:\n\n\n\n\nDISCOVER the range of narrative frameworks that turn ideas and material into compelling stories\n\n\n\nLEARN TO CLOSE READ for the architecture behind stories that resonate and endure: Journey\, Mystery\, Braid\, Mosaic\n\n\n\nMATCH the essential shape your particular story needs with the proven structural template that best supports your material\n\n\n\nTRANSFORM your initial inspiration into reader-friendly\, memorable\, complete narratives\n\n\n\nEXAMINE hidden mechanics of withholding\, pace\, and revelation.\n\n\n\nTRACE and strengthen the A-to-B change trajectory that gives stories both momentum and meaning.\n\n\n\nREPLACE simplistic “show\, don’t tell” advice with a more powerful understanding of how narrative information and story momentum actually work for readers.\n\n\n\n\nWhether you’re getting ready to write your first memoir or in the midst of revising your fifth novel\, you’ll find a place in this course. The common denominator is not experience level but commitment: participants should be actively working on a project or wanting to do so and ready to engage deeply with questions of structure. \n\n\n\nThis course is ideal for ambitious beginners to seasoned writers …\n\n\n\n\nwho want their fiction or memoir to find—and move—readers \n\n\n\nwith an idea (or 2 or 3) for a story or book project—but who are struggling to get the project off the ground\n\n\n\nwhose project is up and running\, but it has been difficult to bring to completion\n\n\n\nwho have a project in mind or in the works and who have taken at least a few writing classes or seminars\n\n\n\n\nClosed captioning is available. ✔Think you might miss a class? No worries\, replays will be available. ✔ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Heather Sellers has been teaching for over thirty years\, and she doesn’t teach like anyone else. SUMMARY:WEBINAR | Fix It\, Make It Better: The Fine Art of Revising Memoir
DESCRIPTION:Revision\, some say\, is the hardest part of writing\, but this stage can also be the most rewarding and pleasurable.\n\n\n\nFor Memoir and Nonfiction ProseIncluded in the Season Pass \n\n\n\nCapturing our memories—vividly\, thoroughly\, and carried along by palpable emotion—takes skill and concerted effort. But the task of writing compelling memoir doesn’t end there. Once we’ve given the story our best shot\, once we’ve powered our way through an early draft or two\, how do we take what we’ve created and use the powerful tools of revision to make the memoir shine? \n\n\n\nContrary to common wisdom\, this is one task where it’s often not productive to start at the beginning. A story has multiple moving parts—sentences\, paragraphs\, chapters\, the beginning\, and the end. Successful revision happens when we learn to step back from our writing\, making deliberate choices about when to intervene\, where to intervene\, and what changes will work best. \n\n\n\nThe key to effective revision—whether you’re writing a memoir or a six-page personal essay—is understanding that revision can take multiple approaches. Learn how to weigh those choices with intention\, and walk away with tools you can apply to any project\, in any genre. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, you will:\n\n\n\n\nLEARN how to enjoy revision\, looking forward to it with anticipation\n\n\n\nDISCERN which revision approach works best at what stage of the writing\n\n\n\nOVERTURN that nagging feeling that you have been “revising forever”\n\n\n\nFIND the best ways to establish what should be included in the memoir and what should be left out\n\n\n\n\nThis webinar is ideal for writers at any level\, at any stage who…\n\n\n\n\nare uncertain how to effectively improve early drafts\n\n\n\nworry they spend too much time polishing and re-polishing sentences\n\n\n\nfind revision unpleasant or worrisome\n\n\n\n\nClosed captioning is available. ✔All registrants receive the recording. ✔ \n\n\n\nABOUT YOUR PRESENTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOne of our most popular and beloved presenters\, DINTY W. MOORE is author of the memoirs Between Panic & Desire and To Hell With It and the writing guides Crafting the Personal Essay and The Mindful Writer\, among other books. His insightful teaching\, calm sensibility\, and wicked sense of humor make his classes a delight as well as bringing useful techniques for every writer. SUMMARY:WEBINAR | Sentencing: Power\, Precision\, and Purpose in Every Line
DESCRIPTION:Break out of your habitual syntax\, and harness the energy in the smallest\, most important narrative unit.\n\n\n\nFor Memoir and Nonfiction ProseIncluded in the Season Pass \n\n\n\nWriting lives or dies at the sentence level. So what makes a sentence work? Learn the nuances of sentence craft and make sure every line carries its weight. \n\n\n\nThe sentence is the essential building block of any piece of writing—and it must do multiple kinds of work at once: convey meaning\, generate emotion\, and sustain momentum. Yet many writers underestimate how much power resides at this level and how deliberately sentences must be shaped to carry that weight. This isn’t about grammar or a particular “literary voice\,” but about understanding the mechanics of sentence craft to carry out your true\, distinct voice while delivering a powerful story. \n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, we take a focused look at the art of the sentence. You will learn to shape sentences that create authority\, distinctiveness\, and voice; build fresh new patterns that sustain reader interest from line to line; and diagnose the hidden strengths and weaknesses in your own sentence-level habits. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, you will:\n\n\n\n\nIDENTIFY the sentence habits that limit a manuscript’s effectiveness \n\n\n\nAPPLY three key sentence techniques—compression\, expansion\, and rhythm control—to create more compelling prose\n\n\n\nBUILD special sentence-level craft skills\, including strategic withholding\, revelation\, and syntactic variation\n\n\n\nLEARN how to revise ordinary sentences into memorable\, voice-driven lines that carry greater emotional and narrative impact AND\n\n\n\nDESIGN purposeful sequences of sentences that generate momentum\, surprise\, and flow on the page\n\n\n\n\nThis webinar is ideal for beginning writers or seasoned pros in need of a tune-up.\n\n\n\nClosed captioning is available. ✔All registrants receive the recording. ✔ \n\n\n\nABOUT YOUR PRESENTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Heather Sellers has been teaching for over thirty years\, and she doesn’t teach like anyone else. SUMMARY:SEMINAR | When Things Happen: Mastering Chronology in Fiction and Nonfiction
DESCRIPTION:Learn to manipulate your reader‘s experience of time to create pace\, surprise\, and deeper engagement with your words.\n\n\n\nFor Fiction and Creative Nonfiction\, Essay and Memoir \n\n\n\nIn the real world\, we live our lives forward\, chronologically\, and at the same rate as everyone else. But writers can master time to speed up and slow down the reader’s experience\, move through time for emotional effects\, and alter time to support dramatic moments.  \n\n\n\nIn this session—equally helpful for both fiction and nonfiction writers—we’ll examine how narratives by such authors as Cheryl Strayed\, Ryan Van Meter\, Michelle Kuo\, Jaquira Diaz\, JRR Tolkien\, Jeannette Walls\, Nicholson Baker\, and others all strategically manipulate the reader’s experience of time and to what effect.  \n\n\n\nWe’ll examine the pacing of a story (how quickly through time we move)\, the sequence of storytime (whether the story is being told chronologically or not)\, and the use of flashback and flashforward. We’ll also examine the use of narrative summary versus scene and learn techniques like sentence length\, visual layout\, and more to alter the experience of time and increase reader engagement in a story. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this seminar\, you will:\n\n\n\n\nEXPLORE the key elements of manipulating time in your narratives and what effects they have on readers\n\n\n\nDISCOVER alternate storytelling structures for fiction and nonfiction\n\n\n\nLEARN HOW to break free of traditional\, linear time management in your narratives\n\n\n\n\nThis course is ideal for all writers …\n\n\n\n\nat all levels\, from experienced writers to those new to their genre\n\n\n\nwho feel stuck in “this happened\, and this happened\, then this happened” structures\n\n\n\nwho’d like to experiment with structure to make sure their work captures the attention and engages their readers\n\n\n\nstruggling with where and how to use flashbacks or add backstory\n\n\n\n\nClosed captioning is available. ✔Think you might miss a class? DESCRIPTION:Reflection is one of the most powerful techniques in memoir but also one of the most misused. Learn how to craft your insights to deepen the narrative rather than interrupting.\n\n\n\nFor Memoir Included in the Season Pass \n\n\n\nIn a memoir\, you’re writing from the future\, looking back. That’s the gift of memoir: perspective that your past self didn’t have. But knowing when to use that insight and how much is one of the craft challenges writers struggle with most. Step in too quickly and you flatten the tension. Interpret too much and you rob the reader of the experience. Yet stay too firmly in the past and you’ll lose the meaning the whole story builds toward. \n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, we’ll look closely at what reflection actually does in memoir: how reflective and retrospective narration connects to themes\, reveals character growth\, and illuminates what couldn’t be known in the moment—and how it can just as easily disrupt a scene\, signal a lack of trust in the reader\, or become a crutch for scenes that need more work. We’ll read examples from published memoirs to see how skilled writers deploy reflection at exactly the right moment and why it lands. \n\n\n\nYou’ll leave with a clear framework for evaluating the reflection in your own manuscript: where to cut\, where to deepen\, and where to let the scene do the work without commentary. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, you will:\n\n\n\n\nEXAMINE the difference between the narrative\, reflective\, and retrospective voices—and when to use each one.\n\n\n\nLEARN five tools for using reflection effectively\, using examples from published memoirs. \n\n\n\nIDENTIFY (and learn to avoid) the most common pitfalls of reflection.\n\n\n\nDISCOVER targeted writing exercises for folding reflection into your narratives. \n\n\n\nDEVELOP an editorial eye to distinguish between reflection that amplifies a scene and reflection that is intrusive or diffuses the tension.\n\n\n\n\nThis webinar is ideal for writers \n\n\n\n\nwith a complete or in-progress memoir and are looking to revise\n\n\n\nwho’ve been told their manuscript “over-explains” or that readers feel “told rather than shown”\n\n\n\nstruggling to know when to let a scene breathe versus when to step in with the narrator’s adult understanding\n\n\n\nwhose early drafts are full of meaning-making they know needs to be cut—but aren’t sure what to keep\n\n\n\n\nClosed captioning is available. ✔All registrants receive the recording. ✔ \n\n\n\nABOUT YOUR PRESENTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKatie Bannon’s teaching is encouraging and practical\, with step-by-step guidance and concrete tools.
