But too often\, we over-write—spelling out emotions\, explaining through dialogue\, interrupting memoir scenes with reflection or novel scenes with backstory—so that readers are watching someone else have an experience. By paring down our prose to singular details and powerful images\, we give room for the reader to “lean in” to the story\, actively assemble information\, and share the discoveries\, realizations\, tears\, and laughter on the page. \n\n\n\nIn this interactive webinar (let’s call it a workshop!) we’ll prune text\, remove summaries to let details stand\, and use gestures and images to create meaning and feeling. We’ll examine how to “score” text by arranging it on the page\, making the visual processing of words and white space part of the reader’s experience. In published examples from fiction and memoir\, we’ll learn how juxtaposition\, high-context dialogue\, and purposeful repetition give emotional punch. And we’ll challenge ourselves to create endings without explanations that resonate in the reader’s mind long after they’ve closed the book. \n\n\n\nRaise your craft level and gain a tool kit. DESCRIPTION:Write your book’s “blurb”—the sharp\, versatile pitch for submissions\, promotion\, and marketing that defines what your book is and why it matters.\n\n\n\nAll Genres \n\n\n\nWhether you call it “jacket copy\,” an “extended pitch” or the meat of your query\, your book’s blurb is critical. This short piece of persuasive copy determines whether someone reads on\, requests the manuscript\, or buys the book. Just 150 words do a lot of heavy lifting: positioning your book in the market\, introducing your protagonist and stakes\, and making a promise that reading will be worth the commitment.  \n\n\n\nBut many writers get stuck with blurbs that sound generic or interchangeable with another author’s book. Shortcuts\, AI\, and borrowed language won’t sum up the heart of 100\,000 words. You have to step inside your book and ask what it is truly offering—and then stress-test whether or not your manuscript delivers on that promise. \n\n\n\nWhen I finally arrived at the right 150 words for my own memoir/reported nonfiction project\, everything fell into place. I received thoughtful\, encouraging passes instead of crickets\, and in a very short period of time\, two offers of publication. As I wrote and revised\, the blurb became a microcosm of my story’s logic and the reason someone would choose my book over anything else in front of them. \n\n\n\nAgents are looking for the blurb in your query letter (and will use it to sell your book to publishers). Editors are looking for the blurb in your book proposal. Marketers are looking for the blurb in your materials. And most importantly\, your readers are looking to be fulfilled by the blurb’s promise. But too often\, writers default to physical description—characters pausing in front of conveniently reflective surfaces—or narrating our own judgements of the people we know\, rather than allowing readers to make those discoveries themselves. As an actor\, playwright\, and director\, Allison K Williams has explored character creation inside and out. \n\n\n\nIn this special 2-hour webinar\, you’ll learn how to use tools from theatre to analyze your own text and create stronger characters on the page. DESCRIPTION:When words fail\, images can unlock secrets. Surprise the stuck places in your manuscript by looking at them anew. \n\n\n\nFor All Writers \n\n\n\nSometimes the most effective way through a writing challenge is without words.  \n\n\n\nIn both writing and visual art\, what’s beyond the page or the frame often holds the key. Finding that hidden context can help a lifeless scene find its heartbeat. Images\, photographs\, illustrations\, even collages\, can help us see our stories differently. Surrealist imagery is particularly effective because it’s already characterized by the juxtaposition of unexpected elements. \n\n\n\nWe’ll begin with quick-start generative prompts to help you identify an area in your writing to focus on during our time together. Then\, we’ll look at traditional images and use them to help unlock a challenging place in your manuscript. Learn to show how your character feels and make the reader feel it\, too.\n\n\n\nLive On Zoom | Saturdays\, September 5 & 12\, 2026 | 2-4 pm EasternFor Creative Nonfiction and Fiction Writers \n\n\n\nAs fiction and non-fiction writers\, we often want to evoke agony on the page—grief\, misery\, blinding fury. Yet we get feedback: “What is the narrator feeling?” \n\n\n\nOver two sessions\, we’ll examine how we\, as writers\, can do two separate things: \n\n\n\n\nEvoke emotions within the READER: sorrow\, compassion\, and empathy \n\n\n\nEffectively show how the point-of-view character/narrator is feeling\n\n\n\n\nThese two jobs are often conflated; people assume if they describe how a character is feeling\, readers will also feel those feelings. Alas\, it’s not that simple. \n\n\n\nWe’ll focus on why it’s not just important to render the feelings themselves and how we can’t intentionally manipulate the reader with forced or pushed emotions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this insightful two-day course\, you will:\n\n\n\n\nDISTINGUISH between evoking emotion in the reader and describing what a character feels—and learn why conflating the two weakens your work\n\n\n\nDIAGNOSE the “what is the narrator feeling?” note and understand what’s actually missing from the page\n\n\n\nPRACTICE techniques for rendering emotion through action\, image\, and subtext \n\n\n\nRECOGNIZE where emotional writing turns maudlin or overwrought—and how to pull back before you lose the reader\n\n\n\nAPPLY these techniques to a piece of your own work across two sessions\, with feedback for a selection of students on the second day\n\n\n\n\nSchedule…\n\n\n\nDay One—We start with the core distinction the whole workshop builds on: showing emotion versus evoking it. You’ll get a set of practical tips for writing feelings without naming them\, look at examples from published work\, and break into small groups to hunt for more on your own. Then a short in-class prompt—write an intense moment with the feelings stripped out—followed by open Q&A. \n\n\n\nHomework: Find two pages of your own work centered on a character or narrator feeling a big emotion. Revise so the emotion rises naturally from the material rather than being pushed onto the reader.
