Navigating Memories in Memoir: What You Can’t Remember is an Opportunity, Not a Problem

August 21 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm EDT

    $15.00 (early bird) | Nonfiction

Stop worrying about exact facts. Embracing memory’s unreliability expands our stories and strengthens our voice.

Memoir writers often grow anxious about our reliability as narrators: what we recall clearly, what we recall only through the fog of time, what we may be recalling incorrectly. Yes, memory is inexact, but embracing these issues provides opportunities to strengthen both voice and character, build trust, and allow our readers more room to make sense of the story for themselves.

In our webinar, we will examine the different types of memories that arise, explore strategies for presenting incomplete memories, tackle the thorny “but my sister said it happened differently” moments, and work with stories where very little is remembered because of time or trauma. You’ll also receive useful examples, and prompts for your own work.

 In this webinar you will…

  • EXPLORE different types of memories and strategies for including them in memoir
  • LEARN HOW “fuzzy” memories are opportunities to deepen a story, not obstacles to telling it
  • DISCOVER how readers respond to narrative uncertainty and speculation
  • ENGAGE with prompts to unearth new memories

This webinar is ideal for…

  • Writers worrying about the accuracy of memory, or experiencing family pushback on “what really happened.”
  • Writers who want to tackle a subject where very little is remembered, because of time or trauma
  • Writers who want to strengthen the reader-writer bond in memoir or essay
