Writing for Modern Love: Tips & Tricks for a Passionate, Publishable Essay

February 14 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EST

$25

Love is hard. Writing about it doesn’t have to be.

Since 2004, the popular Modern Love column has been a weekly fixture in the Sunday New York Times, spawning countless memoirs, a TV show, a very popular podcast, and more. It’s also one of the few genuine meritocracies in publishing–editor Daniel Jones is looking for great stories, not connections or credits. As a result, Modern Love is popular with aspiring and accomplished writers alike.

Writing a great Modern Love column can be surprisingly straightforward if you have the right tools and techniques. After reading hundreds of Modern Love columns over the years, publishing my own in 2015, and talking with past contributors, I’ve distilled the essential elements of a successful Modern Love essay.

In this presentation, you will:
  • FIND the right story. Most of us have several stories we could tell–learn what will best fit and how to find your unique angle.
  • INCREASE stakes and suspense by building on and transforming conflict and tragedy to create real tension for the reader.
  • BOOST your writing style by highlighting your unique voice–while still fitting the New York Times.
  • END powerfully, with specific writing tips and tricks to bring it all together.

This webinar is for anyone who’s ever tried or is interested in writing a Modern Love column.
